What Is A Convection Oven And How To Maintain It?

What exactly is a convection oven?

Convection oven contains a fan that circulates the air within the oven chamber, with an exhaust system to emit the old air out. It cooks the food faster compared to a conventional oven as the heat is distributed evenly in the oven. It is good for baking cookies, pastries, and cooking anything in a covered dish because of the airflow. The dry environment also improves the texture of some dishes.

Benefits:

  1. There are multiple racks so you can efficiently cook several dishes simultaneously, including baking something for desserts.
  2. Due to the constant circulation of the air, it takes less time for baking and roasting, also cookies come out brown and crispy.

How can we expand the lifespan of the convection oven?

  1. To increase its lifespan, upon completion of the cooking cycle, wipe the interior clean as soon as it cools off. Also, clean the area around the fan motor to maintain good air circulation in the convection oven.
  2. Moreover, inspect the oven door seal (gasket) to ensure heat does not escape to the outside. If needed replace it.

Maintenance and cleaning:

  1. Clean the oven properly: Use a wipe with detergent dissolved in hot water. If any stains remain, non-metallic scouring pads may be used.
  2. Take care of fans: Inspect the fan motor and exhaust system of the oven every week. If parts need replacement, promptly change them.
  3. Inspect the doors: The oven won’t reach the desired temperature if the doors are not closing completely. So always take care of the door gaskets and the door assembly.
  4. Monitor the thermostat: For the oven to work efficiently, always make sure it reaches the desired temperature. If the food is not cooked properly in an appropriate amount of time, there might be something off in the internal chamber. You can test it by placing a thermometer inside the oven and comparing the readings (temperature setting and actual temperature). If you find any difference then you might need to change the thermostat which regulates the temperature.

Tips to clean the convection oven:

  1. Let the oven cool off!

First, make sure the oven is cool, to prevent any burns while cleaning it. When you clean the oven, it is necessary to wear gloves to ensure chemicals are not affecting your skin.

  1. Clean the oven racks:

Remove the racks from the oven, and spray them with an oven-cleaning product. Alternatively, natural options can be used, such as lemon juice and vinegar. To remove any stubborn residual grease or food, you can immerse the racks in hot soapy water for 10 minutes, then scrub the racks with a brush or pad. Finally, rinse them properly.

  1. Clean the interior walls:

When you take the racks out of the oven, clean the interior walls with a warm towel. You can also use an oven cleaner to remove the grease and tough stains. Most importantly, wipe the area around the fans well to maintain proper airflow, to maximize efficiency.
